What is EPDM roofing?

EPDM roofing is a rubber membrane system used on flat roofing. The material is a synthetic rubber primarily made from ethylene and propylene. A durable and long-lasting solution, EPDM roofing systems are economical and easy to use.

How is it installed?

The roof surface needs to be clean and dry for the EPDM rubber membrane to adhere. The membrane should then be allowed to relax totally flat in position for approximately 30 minutes. The membrane can then be folded back onto itself to allow adhesive to be applied to the roof surface. An even layer across the entire surface area for the adhesive is essential. Ensuring the adhesive is still wet, roll the membrane back into position across the roof. Once it is in place with no bumps or wrinkles, broom the membrane to achieve maximum contact with the adhesive.

Membranes such as ClassicBond, Firestone and Hertalan can all be made to measure and cut to size to match the size of the roof required. There will need to be an allowance for features such as overhang, under tiles and up walls.

What are the benefits?

Due to the materials it made from and a life expectancy of 50 years or more, it is one of the most cost-effective choices. It is very easy to install, which helps save both time and money. The durable surface is not easy to scuff or scratch, and with little to no seams, leaks are rare, but easy to fix if they do occur.

A heat-free installation also makes EPDM roofing a safer system to use, with minimal maintenance throughout its lifetime. Whilst some heat may be absorbed, the material is not easily damaged by UV rays. This makes it suitable for sunnier climates.

How much do I need?

The specified area will need to be measured carefully, taking into consideration the extra allowance on either side of the membrane. However, there are tools available to make this process easier. Roofing Superstore’s EPDM Kit Calculator works out the cost of the kit required depending on the measurements of the surface area.
