This Permavent Easy Slate Side Check is a 'side lap strip' for 600 x 300mm slate. It seals the perp joint on the slate so that the layers of the slates cannot be penetrated by water.
Easy Slate extends the head lap from the upper slate's tail to the head of the slate beneath. A roof with 500mm x 250mm slates with a 100mm lap, for example, gains a sealed perp join and 300mm head lap.
Typically, slate roofs have a less than 0.5mm gap among layers. Too small of a gap can result in air pressure drawing water between the slates via capillary action, causing leaks. Easy Slate allows a 1mm raise of slates for increased gaps that permit free air movement below slates. As a result, air pressure releases and capillary action is removed.
An increased head lap and a lack of capillary action further enhance weather resistance. Wind slate rattle and condensation passing through the Breather Membrane is also eliminated, making counter battens unnecessary. Slates are then suited to installation across various previously incompatible roofs, such as complicated, exposed or low-pitched roofs.
