Fire-rated membranes ensure your roof and walls have a level of fire protection while also providing either an airtight or water-resistant barrier.
Our collection of fire-rated roofing membranes come in two different types: breather membranes and VCLs (vapour control layers). Fire rated breather membranes offer water resistance and sit on the cold side of the insulation or roof envelope. Fire-rated VCLs sit on the warm side, providing an airtight layer and help to prevent moisture and condensation.
Fire rated membranes are available in different levels of fire protection. Class B offers limited combustibility and self extinguishes, while Class A1 is 100% non-combustible, meaning it does not contribute to the spread of fire in any way. However, Class A1 membranes often have compromised water-resistance, taking them from W1 to W2. This is because they are commonly made from fibreglass and aluminium, materials that are incredibly advanced in fire resistance but not completely watertight. Class B membranes are usually more water resistant because they are made from materials like synthetic plastics which do not offer the highest fire rating.
Always check Approved Document B if you are unsure of which fire-rated membrane you need. In order to meet legal requirements, your membrane must be used with the same materials it was tested with to approve its fire rating.
