Cold Roofs
Cold roofs are defined as having insulation installed between and over the ceiling joists, rather than over the rafters, which is found on warm roofs. Cold roofs are found in pitched roofs, as they require the loft space to act as a ventilated void above the ceiling. This means if you’re using your loft space for storage, or it won’t be inhabited, a cold roof may be the best option for you.
Cold roof insulation comes in many different types, including mineral wool, natural wool, and insulation slabs. This is because their installation doesn’t rely on rigid boards – it simply sits on top of the ceiling and doesn’t need to provide structural support.
Cold roof insulation also needs to be vapour-permeable. This means that any moisture that may become trapped will pass through the fibres and into the ventilated cold space above the ceiling. Proper ventilation means that the property will be less susceptible to rot, mould, and structural damage.
