Garage Roofs
Garage roofs are integral to providing waterproofing and preventing mould and dirt build-up in your space. Whilst you can opt for a pitched garage roof, flat garage roofs are generally easier and cheaper to construct. They are also incredibly versatile, as you have a wide range of garage roofing materials to choose from, including durable metal roof sheets and lightweight roof tiles.
As well as the external layer, timber frames and joists, plywood, insulation, and waterproofing materials are also a must.
Roofing Sheets and Tiles
These are fundamental as they provide a rigid structure to your garage roof, as well as protecting any of the timber frame elements underneath. Not only are they practical, but these exterior materials also have an aesthetic purpose, so you can choose exactly how you want your garage roof to look. Opt for lightweight tiles for a traditional roof that are easy and cost-friendly to replace, or metal sheets for something more industrial and quicker to install.
Timber
Also known as roofing beams, timber joists are used for structural support. They run horizontally along the upper walls to hold up the flat roof, which sits on top. Over these, OSB board or plywood sheets are laid before the waterproofing materials. Roofing batten can then be used to hold tiles or sheets in place.
Insulation
An optional addition, adding insulation to your garage roof has many benefits, the main one being the protection of your belongings from extreme weather conditions, and if opting for a flat warm roof, preventing condensation build-up, which can result in mould and rot. Placing rigid insulation over the top of OSB/plywood sheets is typically recommended for this type of roof.
Waterproofing
There are a range of options when it comes to waterproofing and weatherproofing your garage roof. For a cost-effective method, choose roofing felt. If you want something that is low maintenance and long-lasting, EPDM rubber roofing is an excellent solution. If you're looking to repair your existing garage roof, liquid membranes are worth considering as you don't need to replace the entire roof.
