Learn moreCompatible with masonry, brick, and solid wall applications, this Steico Therm Internal Woodfibre Internal Insulation Board is crafted from natural wood fibres. It has a lighter side and a darker side: the light side has been machine sanded in the factory and is the plaster-carrying face, while the darker side is not sanded.
Both easy and quick to fix, this board is high in compression strength and offers superior insulating properties through summer and winter. It is also water vapour open so that water vapour can pass through it. This aids in regulating indoor climates. When houses are built with lime mortar, this can be an important factor when deciding on insulation materials.
Question:
Hi there, I have a Stone house and I am trying to limit the amount of space I lose on internally Insulating... the stone walls inside will be vertically clad with treated timber. My plan was to put 20mm steico wood fibre between the timber rails, and then overlay with a vapour barrier Kingspan K118 insulated plasterboard. Please can you confirm your thoughts on this and would you be able to tell me the total you value? R value? Many thanks.
Answer:
Your plan to use the 20mm Steico Therm Internal Woodfibre Insulation Board between treated timber battens seems to be a good approach for improving the thermal performance of your stone walls while minimizing the loss of internal space. Overlaying this with a vapour barrier like Kingspan K118 insulated plasterboard is also feasible. However, when dealing with solid stone construction, it's essential to consider moisture movement within the wall. Stone walls often need to be able to dry out naturally, so the suitability of a vapour barrier and insulated plasterboard should be assessed as part of the overall wall build-up. Given the complexity of these factors, particularly for older properties, we recommend consulting a building professional or insulation designer to ensure condensation risks are properly addressed. Unfortunately, it's not possible for me to provide an accurate U-value or R-value for the assembly you're considering. These calculations require specific details such as the existing stone wall thickness and construction, the thickness of the timber battens/cavity, the Kingspan K118 insulation thickness being used, the internal and external finishes, and any air gaps or service voids. A professional in the field would be best suited to provide these calculations.
