Vapour Control Layers (VCLs) are used to manage the transition through the building envelope of naturally occurring moisture vapour, which is produced by general building use. Our range of VCL membranes is formulated with a wide variety of construction designs in mind, delivering specific solutions for various applications and requirements.
Novia VC8 Reflective is a technologically advanced reflective air-tight vapour check membrane, with an Sd value engineered specifically for use in insulated wall, roof and floor applications in timber-framed dwellings. This new product delivers the key attributes of a reflective VCL, i.e. improved μ values, interstitial water vapour condensation management and prevention of unwanted air-leakage, but without suffocating the structure with a membrane of undesirably high water vapour resistance. Novia VC6 Reflective effectively manages water vapour diffusion and limits unwanted condensation within wall and ceiling structures, protecting the building envelope from damage. Due to the innovative manufacturing and design parameters of the VC6 Reflective and its carefully chosen Sd value of 6m, indoor air quality is improved when compared with traditional reflective vapour barriers which have unsuitably high vapour resistances.
We advise the use of Novia compatible butyl and foil sealing tapes to ensure a complete barrier integrity throughout the entire life of the product. Novia VC8 should be used in combination with Novia breather membranes to provide an air-tight and vapour resistant system.

VCLs should always be installed on the warm side (i.e. the inside) within all wall, roof or floor insulated frame applications, and would normally be used in conjunction with Novia external breather membranes which are situated on the cold side (i.e. the outside).
Novia membranes will only perform their job if they are correctly installed using Novia tapes as part of a system. Novia uses a two-tape sealing system on all of our VCL products. It is essential that Novia membranes are installed correctly using our tapes, otherwise these products will not provide the necessary building design outcomes. One of the major causes of condensation problems within finished buildings is due to poorly installed membranes and where incorrect tapes have been used.
All Novia VCL products should be 100% fully sealed to the structure using one of our double-sided butyl tapes, and one of the foil or BOPP lap tapes to professionally complete the installation. The wider the tape used, then the stronger the final seal will be, and the easier it will be to install as there is more margin for error, so choose a tape based on your own particular application and budget. Novia recommends our 30mm wide butyl tape and our 60mm Metallised BOPP tape for all standard VCL installations.
